Improving standards of prosecutors and defense lawyers

IPNO advocates for robust funding for public defense services; rigorous training programs for public defenders to ensure lawyers representing poor people in criminal cases are capable of holding the government to its burden of proof; exacting certification requirements for all lawyers wishing to practice criminal law, and strong, consistent and prompt bar discipline for lawyers whose conduct violates the rules of ethics and professionalism.

IPNO also advocates for rigorous training programs within prosecutors’ offices; zero-tolerance supervising attorneys of misconduct in prosecutors’ offices; systems in every office to ensure prosecutors are aware of the contents of the police files on a case, and strong, consistent and prompt bar discipline, without the need for a complaint from a fellow lawyer, for lawyers whose conduct violates the rules of ethics and professionalism.
